SELOUS GAME RESERVE
At 45,000 square
kilometers, the Selous is the largest protected area in Africa and three times
the size of Serengeti National Park. It is estimated that the reserve is home
to 70,000 elephant, 100,000 wildebeest, 120,000 buffalo and 40,000 hippo.
Hunting is permitted in the reserve and thus the area visited by photographic
safaris is quite small, despite the reserve's large area. There are only a
handful of small tented camps and approximately 1% of Tanzania's visitors
include the Selous as part of their safari itinerary. Duma includes Selous as a
fly-in, fly-out package to one of the park camps. Walking and boat safaris are
permitted in Selous Game Reserve.
